Buxton has not been forgotten – Min. Broomes

DPI, Guyana, Saturday, September 1, 2018

More than 200 children and their parents were today reassured by Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes that Buxton has not been forgotten by her government.

The minister was at the time distributing back-to-school supplies, compliments of the Ministry of Natural Resources, to children whom all left with smiling faces having received their gifts of encouragement.

“Buxton has not been forgotten, your government care for you, and I will come back here more often. Whatever it is that we can do we will ensure that we move Buxton likewise the entire Guyana forward,” Minister Broomes said.

Speaking earlier at a brief ceremony before handing over the items, she encouraged the youths and their parents to be determined in the pursuit of education.

“We know that your community was neglected. However, there is a new government and I believe one of the ways in which we can continue to push back these dark clouds is through education. Education is the key to bringing Buxton back. I encourage you to attend school. Parents, send the children to school. … Through education villages like Buxton will take back its rightful place,” the minister explained.

In addition, Minister Broomes encouraged those gathered to reflect on the years of the previous administration and use it as a source of encouragement to pursue in earnest, education opportunities as they become available. This, she says, will ensure a turn around of the fortunes of the historic village and its residents.

“The 20-something years which you have suffered has damaged many generations of our young people, but we can turn it around through education. Parents, regardless of what you are feeling now you can protect your children by educating them,” she said.

The distribution of books, bags and items of school stationery was a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Natural Resources, represented by Minister Broomes and members of the recently formed Society for African Guyanese Empowerment (SAGE), Buxton Chapter which was represented by Vice Chairperson Morris Wilson.
