Construction of water treatment plants on schedule for October

  • Uitvlugt, Diamond, and Sheet Anchor to benefit

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, July 03, 2018

Construction of the three treatment plants at Uitvlugt (West Bank of Demerara), Diamond (East Bank of Demerara), and Sheet Anchor, (Canje Berbice) is progressing and will be completed by October 2018.

This was disclosed by Managing Director of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Dr. Richard Van West-Charles in a recent interview with the Department of Public Information, (DPI).

According to Dr. Van West-Charles, the treatment plants will improve the quality and sustainability of water supply to these communities as well as complement GWI’s existing 24 water plants across Guyana.

These projects fall under the purview of GWI’s Department of Infrastructure. The department is working assiduously to construct treatment plants and drill wells in all ten administrative regions of Guyana.

A new treatment plant for Friendship on the East Bank of Demerara and a new well for Port Mourant, East Berbice Corentyne are imminent. Additionally, efforts are also in place for wells at Fyrish, East Berbice Corentyne and Lusignan  on the East Coast of Demerara.

“We put in a request for supplementary support for the wells at Fyrish and Lusignan. The Lusignan well is down so we have put in for some additional support. We are also working to put a well at the Farm community where approximately 1200 new house lots were allocated by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA). Our analysis is that the well at Providence well is unable to supply that community hence the need for a new well at Farm,” Dr. Van West-Charles explained.

According to the Managing Director, the utility company is pursuing a rig which will enable it to drill a well at Madewini. Other areas that will benefit from wells include Five Mile, Bartica and hinterland communities.

Budget 2018 has seen the provision of $3.2Billion to improve the quality of water supply across the country. GWI’s strategic plan is to achieve universal access to safe and affordable drinking water.
