Chairperson of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Region Four, Genevieve Allen, has urged the residents of Friendship-Vigilance and other East Coast of Demerara (ECD) communities to take full advantage of government’s investment in infrastructure to prevent flooding and aid agricultural development in the previously flood-prone area.

Regional Chairperson, Genevieve Allen.

“I will urge all of the farmers within these communities that are going to benefit from these projects that you take the full opportunity that is given to your communities and we look forward to seeing an increase in agriculture production that is coming from the East Coast of Demerara.” Allen was speaking at the recent commissioning of the new pump station at New Friendship-Vigilance on April 04.

Allen noted that the installation of this drainage pump will provide relief to residents and farmers in the neighbouring communities. This is in light of reports that farmers are enthusiastic about returning to the land, since some have reportedly achieved increased production with improved drainage and irrigation.

The Regional Chairperson further challenged the beneficiaries to bring to fruition, the great possibilities the agricultural sector offers. Especially, given government’s investments in infrastructure to prevent crop loss from flooding and other perils.

“It was touted some years ago that Guyana will become the breadbasket of the Caribbean I urge you with this great investment by the government of Guyana let us make it not only a thought not only mere words but the realization with the investment in agriculture that is being made in our communities.”

The new pump station, which was commissioned by Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder, government officials and other stakeholders, is the second to be commissioned on the East Coast of Demerara. The station has a 70.6 cusec pump with the capacity to discharge water at a rate of 31,700 gallons per minute and costs $240M.
