As the Ministry of Public Health anticipates a new National Health Communications Strategic Plan, Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings says that emphasis must be placed on how the ministry can seek to enhance its image.

The National Health Communications Strategic Plan 2018-2022 is likely to address inefficiencies of communication between the ministry and the public as it relates to information coming from the public health sector. Moreover, focus must be placed on management of information internally, before it is disseminated to the public.

Dr. Cummings noted that that public health messages are more likely to be understood if the ministry has a capable Public Relations arm.

“Regardless of how effective an organisation is, it will not have the desired impact if the public and its clients or customers are not aware of its brand, successes, or contributions. A public relations campaign that educates and informs people about the contributions of the organisation enhances its brand recognition and makes it more relevant in the public eye.” Minister Cummings said.

The ministry has the responsibility “to tell our own stories. We must take ownership of our achievements. We must be on top of every aspect of public health that is taking place within the sector. Proactive public communication must become the norm and not the exception,” the minister added.

More importantly, the ministry is self-mandated to lead the public narrative on public health and related issues in Guyana. It is believed that the health communication strategy will facilitate the responsibilities of an effective public relations and external communication image.
