A historic deal signed with the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will see Guyana for the first time hosting the playoff matches. The games will see the top four teams from the group stages compete at the Providence Stadium on September 11 and 12 2018.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon (right) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CPL, Pete Russell shakes hand after the meeting.

At a media briefing meeting today at the Ministry of Presidency, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon said this move befittingly rewards the Guyanese diaspora for their faith in CPL.

“I believe that Guyanese cricket fans are the most loyal in the Caribbean and I believe that CPL now understands that Guyana has a strong administration, that is committed to sport. We understand the role sport plays in our national psyche and in the happiness of our people and we want to ensure that sport plays a meaningful role in the kind of investment which is made in the happiness of our people,” Minister Harmon explained.

The government’s assistance in the games will take the form of statuary waivers for incoming equipment for the game. Minister Harmon noted government will not be funding any of the games. He is optimistic of a bright future for Guyana and CPL.

A total of seven Hero CPL matches including five group games will be held here, this year. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CPL, Pete Russell opined that Guyana may soon be the home of CPL in the Caribbean.

“We’re delighted because for CPL Guyanese cricket fans are what make the CPL what it is the biggest party in the sport. It resonates around the world everyone wants to see it and our objective is to make Guyana the home of the sport in the Caribbean so we are thrilled that this day has come.”
