Hundreds of Lindeners benefit from free ophthalmology services

DPI, Guyana, Monday, May 07, 2018

Over 400 residents of Linden on May 4 benefited from free ophthalmology services at the Linden Hospital Complex.  The George Subraj Family Foundation (GSFF) which comprises of a team of doctors and ophthalmologists also from the Georgetown Public Hospital Cooperation (GPHC) tested persons for eye diseases such as cataract and glaucoma and distributed free prescriptive reading and sunglasses as well as prescriptive eye care medication.

The GSFF is continuing the work of its founder George Subraj who conducted several medical missions in Guyana. With his passing last year, the family is continuing the work and knowing that he had a bond with the town of Linden, a decision was made to conduct an ophthalmology mission in the mining town.

President of GSFF, Tony Subraj said, “we are continuing my father’s work that started in the early 90’s, giving back to the people of Guyana”. The GSFF had conducted four missions in 2017 and two, thus far, in 2018 with over 1,000 pairs of prescriptive and reading glasses being distributed. The Linden mission, however, was deemed the biggest and most supported and there are plans to return to the mining town to provide more medical services to the residents.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Linden Hospital Complex, Toshanna Allicock said: “The turn out that we saw today was beyond extraordinary.”  The outreach continued today.

The GSFF conducts missions three times per year in Guyana. It pioneered Guyana’s first Kidney Transplant in 2008.
