NGO donates school supplies to top NGSA students

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, August 15, 2018

Several students who excelled in the 2018 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), today received backpacks, tablets, laptops and other school supplies as the local non-governmental organisation Give Another Chance Foundation (GACF) held its third annual Education Awards ceremony at St. Joseph High School.

In brief remarks, guest-speaker, Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence urged the students to continue to strive for excellence in their pursuit of higher education. This, she said, will aid in the development of the country.

“It is good for you to dream but in order to make those dreams a reality, you have to ensure that you remain focused on your education because that is one of the main keys that will unlock the door of opportunity so that you can blossom and grow.”

The minister encouraged the students to “remain true told themselves” as they enter secondary school and challenged them to aspire to be top students as they embark on the next stage of their educational pursuit.

In an invited comment, Janita Singh of Providence Primary School, who earned 489 marks at the NGSA said, “It makes me feel good that I have done very well especially making my family proud. I am also grateful for what the organisation [GACF] has given me.”

Stefon Tanner, of Tucville Primary, thanked the NGO for the supplies since they will assist with his preparation for the upcoming term in a new school.

The group will be in Wakenaam, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) on Thursday to present school supplies to that region’s top NGSA students.

Founded in 2010, GACF is a non-profit organisation, aimed to help communities find long-term solutions to poverty through innovative education and livelihood projects. The group is focused on improving the lives of persons, specifically children, through the provision of basic education from pre-school to university, and healthcare to underprivileged children in rural and urban communities.
