Prime Minister urges Muslim community to look to those in need – as Ramadan begins

Georgetown, GINA, June 8, 2016

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo is urging members of the Muslim community to look towards “those in need” as the holy month of Ramadan begins.

“To all our members of the Muslim community, we wish you a great period of fasting, of prayers, of sacrifice and also of charity and good will. This is a period of time in Guyana’s life where many people look towards those in need, those who need help and those who can do with a little bit more,” The Prime Minister stated.

He explained that the Muslim community in Guyana has been an exemplar in sharing and doing good in their community and the wider society.

“I wish you all the best in this period of Ramadan and I hope to see you when we celebrate Eid Ul Fitr,” the Prime Minister said.

Ramadhan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and the month in which the Quran was revealed. Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It’s an incredibly sacred time for Muslims who believe that during Ramadan the Qu’ran – the holy book – was revealed to mankind through the Prophet Muhammad.

Ramadan commenced on Tuesday, June 7.
