Stirring route march marks 179th anniversary of Police Force

In neat rows of blue and brown, scores of policemen and women, this morning, marched briskly through the streets of Georgetown in observance of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) 179th Anniversary.

The march commenced at the Tactical Services Unit Drill Square, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary then wended its way through several main streets in downtown Georgetown before heading into Brickdam. There, the marchers received the salute from Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan in front of the Ministry of Public Security. The parade then headed to Young Street, for the Commissioner’s Salute in front of Police Headquarters before culminating at the Police Headquarters Compound.

Delivering the feature address, Commissioner of Police (ag), David Ramnarine urged the officers to remain steadfast and to remember the oath they took to serve and protect citizens of Guyana. He noted that they must serve the people with the highest quality in mind.

According to Ramnarine, the GPF has faced numerous challenges and will continue to face such tests as they continue to strive for excellence.

“What matters is how we deal with those challenges whether we lie down, get up and keep moving forward for the benefit of the people and the country, as a whole….we are better than that,” Acting Commissioner added, noting that the force has a long way to go towards effectively and efficiently serve the people of Guyana.

The winners of the road march were based on basic foot drill, turns and uniforms among others.

The Presidential Guard and Tactical Services Unit No. one, tied for the title of Overall Best unit with 292 points each. In the Best-Dressed Uniform category, the Immigration Unit’s female division won with 289 and Criminal Investigations Department took the Best-Dressed Civilian Unit with 282 points.
