DPI, GUYANA, Thursday, May 24, 2018

“There can be no value attached to being Guyanese because it is so precious and hence priceless”

Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, reminded young people there can be no value attached to the Guyanese identity at the annual Rights of the Child Commission (RCC) Independence Workshop.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo hands over his writings to Chair of RCC Aleema Nasir and Youth Ambassador Nareema Khan.

The workshop, held at Herdmanston Lodge, sought to reflect on the circumstances surrounding independence and the examine the significance of its notions of and Guyana’s republican status.

“Our rights flow from our identities. Our duties, our responsibilities come from who we are and therefore the benefits of being a citizen of an independent country must also be recognised as the benefits that flow from being who we are,” PM Nagamootoo stated.

The one-day workshop targeted selected secondary school students from Georgetown and Regions Three and Five.

Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs, Valarie Garrido-Lowe called for a greater appreciation of Guyana’s diversity. “I would ask you, young people, to love each other, to appreciate each other, to encourage each other because you are the leaders of tomorrow and you have to lead with kindness, understanding and compassion,” Minister Garrido-Lowe said.

The RCC Chairman, Aleema Nasir, noted the spirit of true independence and republican status must include the protection, education and empowerment of the child.

“The surest way to foster a truly independent nation, to nurture and cultivate a healthy and vibrant people, is simply to protect our children”, Nasir said. The RCC has been engaging critical societal stakeholders whose mandate converge on the rights and interest of children.

Guyana celebrates 52 years of independence on May 26.
