DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, 14 August 2018

Secondary school students from across the country participating in this year’s Youth Parliament were involved in a grand rehearsal today in preparation the first session of debates on Wednesday, August 15.

This batch of Youth Parliamentarians comprised will be discussing topics such as climate change, non-communicable diseases, restructuring of the education sector and youth representation in governance.

Mentors, Stephon Gabriel and Travis Bruce have been grooming the students. Gabriel, a former youth parliamentarian himself said “we are 90 percent ready. Persons can expect something very momentous. Our young people are going to voice their opinions, their concerns on topical matters.”

Bruce, like Gabriel, was a member of the first Youth Parliament in 2015. He noted that the students participating this year are “more equipped and more knowledgeable. So, we have been helping them to prepare their speeches, assisting with their public speaking skills.”

Thursday’s round of debates will see University of Guyana students also tackling issues of climate change along with the media and the press, alternative sentencing in keeping with the Narcotics drug and Psychotropic Substances Act and present a motion on the budding oil and gas sector.

Sitting Members of Parliament from both the Government and the Opposition sides of the House were present to assist the young parliamentarians for their momentous day tomorrow.
