The Minister was at the time addressing the 18th Sitting of the National Assembly of the 12th Parliament at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) on Friday.

He said that this approach is in keeping with the Government’s commitment to promoting integrated sanitation management to safeguard human health and the environment to improve the lives of all Guyanese.

As such, the Government intends to soon commence works for the completion of the construction of Cell Two at the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill Site and the upgrading of disposal sites at Rose Hall, Port Kaituma, Belle Vue, Lethem, Lima, Charity, Lusignan and D’Edward.

Dr. Singh said there is also groundwork for temporary waste disposal sites in Regions Two, Three and Five.

Solid waste management has been an ongoing issue for the country which led to several clean-up exercises undertaken by municipalities. However, more still needs to be done.

Since taking office, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Hon. Nigel Dharamlall has expressed the Government’s stance on addressing the Solid Waste Management Bill which had been overlooked by the APNU+AFC administration.

The Minister has started consultations to create a plan which will strengthen and develop the country’s solid waste management system.

Earlier this year, Minister Dharamlall visited Region Two where the issue of flooding caused by improper solid waste disposal was highlighted. This led to the Minister’s commitment to invest more resources for sustainable waste management.

The $383.1 billion 2021 Budget was presented under the theme, ‘A Path to Recovery, Economic Dynamism and Resilience’.
