DPI, Guyana, Monday, November 26, 2018

“We must recognise the intrinsic and extrinsic value that our cultural heritage has in creating jobs and income, and showcasing Guyana.” This declaration was made by Minister of Finance Winston Jordan as he emphasised the importance of the preservation of Guyanese culture.

The Minister was at the time presenting the 2019 Budget to the National Assembly today. He noted that for far too long development has been equated exclusively with economic growth. The Minister, however, elaborated that strengthening the contribution of culture to sustainable development is central to the delivery of the government’s programmes.

“Approximately $1.1 Billion has been allocated, in 2019, to continue the operations and rehabilitation our national cultural institutions and facilities. This House will be pleased to note that the Indian Immigration Monument at Palmyra, Region Six, will soon be completed and commissioned. A new monument commemorating the Linden Martyrs will be erected in Region 10.”

Further, $350Million will be allocated to help Guyana sufficiently prepare for the Golden Jubilee observances in 2020. According to the Minister, the preparation largely entails the rehabilitation and upgrading of venues for the hosting of national and regional events, along with the construction of commemorative landmarks across the country.

Additionally, steps will be taken to safeguard the livelihood of those in the creative industry by finalising the draft intellectual property rights legislation for Guyana.
