12 new cases of COVID-19

—Region 2 records first case of the virus

The Ministry of Public Health has reported that the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 now stands at 171.

This comes after 36 tests were conducted within the last 24 hours resulting in 12 persons testing positive.

It was also noted that Region Two has registered its first case of the novel coronavirus, this now means eight of the country’s ten regions have reported cases of COVID-19

Of the 171 cases, Guyana has recorded 12 deaths and 99 recoveries.

To date, 1,995 persons have been tested for the novel coronavirus with 1,822 of those yielding negative results.

There are currently 60 active cases in isolation at various facilities across Guyana and 24 persons in institutional quarantine.

Citizens are reminded to continue practising social distancing in the workplace, public spaces, and while using public transportation to reduce the spread of the coronavirus disease. They are also reminded to practise frequent hand washing/sanitising and always wear a face mask if they have to go out.

As of June 16, 2020, the WHO has reported that globally the confirmed cases stand at 7,941,791 with 434,796 deaths. While in the Regions of the Americas, positive cases have reached 3,841,609 with a total of 203,574 deaths.
