133 graduate from BIT training in Moruca

– trainers came from Moruca Community, Region 1

– residents urged BIT officials to collaborate with Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs to broaden programmes

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, February 28, 2019

One hundred and thirty-three (133) youth from the community of Moruca have successfully graduated a skills training programme facilitated by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).

The young people attended programmes administered by BIT; these included Information Technology, block making, catering and cake decorating and refrigeration and AC Repairs.

On Wednesday last at their graduation exercise held at Santa Rosa, Deputy Permanent Secretary attached to the Ministry of Social Protection, Mohan Ramrattan said: “The knowledge, the skills and the training which have been imparted to all of you graduates will contribute to the development of Guyana. We as Guyanese need to recognise the significance and importance of education which all international agencies see as an asset.”

Ramrattan urged the youths to seek further self-development and preparation in expectation of the lucrative oil and gas sector. In total, there were 65 females and 68 males who pursued the training programme over the past four months.

Toshao of Santa Rosa village, Learmond Emmanuel said the youth of the community are very appreciative for the skills acquired and related that the government has contributed immensely to their development.

“The Village Council is willing, and we are prepared to continue to help the youths of Moruca, we were fortunate to acquire our own tutors and facilitators from within the community, we will be prepared to accept further programmes from the Board of Industrial Training,” Emmanuel said, as he urged the graduates to seek further Technical skills by joining the Essequibo Technical Institute to give back to their communities and country.

The Department of Public Information (DPI) spoke to some of the graduates trained in Information Technology (IT) who all agreed their newly acquired skills will benefit them as they move forward.

Nakita Jerome shared that she has applied to begin training in Nursing while Mikhail Williams plans to pursue studies in computer science at the University of Guyana and Sunil Pierre has signed up to begin his studies to become a Business teacher.
