$170M Golden Grove Secondary School commissioned

– equipped with Smart Classroom and 4 Labs

– houses over 700 students

 School is now more welcoming for 722 students of the Golden Grove Secondary School. The $170M school was today commissioned by Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Nicolette Henry.

Describing the project as ‘a job well done’, Minister Henry explained that any time a new educational institution is built, Guyana is on firmer standing.

The commissioning of the school is in keeping with Sustainable Development Goal #4 which aims to provide inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. The minister added that by 2030, Guyana will see a visible and substantial increase in the development of education. Ensuring all students complete secondary education is part of the ministry’s goal.

“As more young people are provided with opportunities to foster personal and professional growth… we are a step closer to where we need to be as a nation,” she remarked.

Citing His Excellency, President David Granger’s continuous support for education, Minister Henry explained that having the largest budgetary allocation denotes the bold effort of the government towards improving education.

The school, which was formerly housed in an old building established 53 years ago, is now in a new structure more conducive to learning and growth. The school is fully equipped with 23 classrooms along with a Smart Classroom and Information Technology Lab, Student Welfare Office, Library, Home Economics Department, a Visual Arts room, an Agricultural Science Department, a canteen/cafeteria area,  a sickbay and a Biology and Integrated Science Laboratory and a Chemistry Laboratory.  The school is expected to foster the holistic development of students’ potential.

Regional Education Officer (ag), Region 4, Tiffany Favourite-Harvey said that additional equipment will be provided for use in the science laboratories.

Education Officer (Secondary), Loren Park, while delivering the history of the founding of the school, shared several interesting nuggets to the students and officials present. While in her remarks, Regional Chairman, Region 4, Genevieve Allen noted that modern educational facilities such as the Golden Grove Secondary promote higher performance outcomes and as such, she is anticipating increased matriculation rate from the school.

Headteacher of the Golden Grove Secondary, Dolores Dublin-Benjamin gave a tour of the school and expressed her gratitude for all of the support given throughout the years by the Department of Education.

The school’s commissioning comes during Education Month 2019, themed “Education: Key to National Development.”
