$19M supplementary sought for well drilling project, flood relief, capping of gas well – Min. Harmon

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon today in the National Assembly clarified that the $19.2M supplementary being sought is for the capping of the gas well at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, drilling of wells in South Rupununi and to provide supplies for Venezuelan migrants and for flood relief in Coastal and other regions.

Minister Harmon explained that eight wells are being drilled in the South Rupununi in collaboration with the Brazilian Construction Engineer Battalion, of which the final two will be drilled by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

The minister said the project also involves capacity building for GDF to enable officers to drill wells in remote areas.

He added that roads leading from Lethem to Aishalton in Region Nine will be constructed.

Of the $19.2M sought, $4.8M will be used to provide food and other supplies for the Venezuelan migrants in Regions One, Seven and Nine, $4M for flood relief supplies in Coastal and Hinterland communities, over $3M for the capping of the gas well at Diamond, $3M for drought relief in Region Nine and $4.2M for the hosting, monitoring and management of the Brazilian team for the well drilling project.
