$2.9Billion allocated for improved water services

Minister of Finance Winston Jordan announced during his presentation of the 2019 Budget that $2.9Billion has been allocated for water improvement to complement the housing and agriculture sectors.

The Minister highlighted the several projects.

The construction of three new water treatment plants at Uitvlugt, Diamond and Sheet Anchor, completion of wells at Vergenoegen, Pouderoyen and Westminster and construction of new wells at Lusignan, Fyrish and Farm.

According to the Minister of Finance, residents of Sandvoort will be among the beneficiaries of the expansion of the New Amsterdam Water Treatment Plant Project.

Residents within Region Two, Pomeroon-Supenaam will also benefit from improved water service through the expansion of transmission mains in Capoey, Hill Top and Mainstay, on the Essequibo Coast, he outlined.

Additionally, Minister Jordan said that expansions to the water supply on the East Bank Demerara (E.B.D) area, at Parika and Ruby backdams will result in thousands of residents benefitting from access to potable water for the first time.

This, he said, will include an upgrade to the water distribution network and transmission mains across the country, including Mabaruma, Orealla, Ithaca and Kingelly village.

The Finance Minister said that works will be executed on the Watooka, Amelia’s Ward and Wisroc Water Treatment plants. Residents living in over 200 Indigenous Peoples communities will benefit from drilling wells, including Mabaruma, Campbelltown, Oronoque and Fyrish in 2019.

The metering programme will continue in 2019 to assist in reducing non-revenue water and improving the quality of service.
