20 streetlights for roads in Bath Settlement

DPI, Guyana, Sunday, August 18, 2019

Residents of Bath Settlement welcomed the installation of twenty streetlights as the Coalition Government continues to bring light to communities.

This commitment was made by Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Hon. Jaipaul Sharma at a well-attended community meeting in the Region 5  (Mahaica-Berbice) community.

The lights will be installed soon, and the minister committed to delivering more lights for other streets in the community in 2020.

The electrification of the streets in the community is the responsibility of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), but several residents have complained that the NDC is stymieing development in the area.

The Woodley Park/Bath Settlement NDC is a PPP/C led group elected after the November 2018 Local Government Elections (LGE). The NDC received a multi-million-dollar subvention from the government to go towards development projects.

Minister Sharma’s commitment has indicated the government’s seriousness to ensuring all communities have access to basic needs.

Also attending the meeting was Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon, who reminded that “Guyana is on the right track.” He underscored the government’s commitment to developing all communities. “We are building this community. Irrespective of who you support!” Harmon said.

He further assured residents that this administration is working hard for all. “This community is a community that is within the heart of the coalition,” he added.

Other matters raised include internal drainage, road maintenance and drainage and irrigation of farmlands.
