2018 Budget will create jobs for everyone- Carrington

Member of Parliament (MP) Michael Carrington during the first day of the 2018 National Budget debates declared that since the economic plan provides for everyone, youth development will clearly be one of the areas to benefit.

He was at the time rebutting statements made by Opposition MP Nigel Dharamlall of the 2018 National Budget providing “little or nothing” for youth, more specifically as it relates to jobs.

The opposition MP during the 2018 budget debates said that the government is banking too much on oil and gas and failed to account for youths. Dharamlall said that the government spoke of job-creation but has failed to reflect this in the 2018 National Budget.

However, Carrington refuted this charge by highlighting that agriculture, the processing/manufacturing of wood products from waste wood and the creation of a cottage industry bolstered by the establishment of a cottage industry act among other things, will create more jobs than that of oil and gas. He also disclosed that the Small Business Council will be establishing a revolving fund of $100M which will significantly assist small business owners across the country.

“The council will be focusing on value-added industry training such as processing, manufacturing and other areas of development, helping in the creation of jobs” Carrington stated. The necessary funds, he said, are already available.

Additionally, the government MP said that an investment of $350M in two industrial estates in Lethem and Belvedere will also generate opportunities for small businesses.
