3-month work before pay policy ‘a thing of the past’ – Min Sarabo-Halley

Minister of Public Service, the Honourable Tabitha Sarabo-Halley announced that the policy of newly hired public servants working for three months before receiving their salaries will now be a thing of the past.

This was disclosed on Thursday in the ministry’s boardroom during Minister Sarabo-Halley’s first press conference since assuming the portfolio of Public Service Minister.  She stated that there is no substantial evidence which guides the practice of the policy.

“Many public servants have reiterated the issue of having to work for three months before being paid… I have thus far found no rule or policy that substantiates this,” she said.

The Honourable Public Service Minister further stated that “this practice is unconscionable and should no longer be a practice in any government agency after the month of July.”

She disclosed that she is working with her staff “to remove this bugbear for those who are desirous of joining the public service”.

The Honourable Public Service Minister emphasised that any new public servant will not have to work for more than a month without getting paid.
