Indranauth Haralsingh, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) noted that, operations involving persons currently being trained require a valid CPR and First Aid certificate.  The training is being facilitated by the GTA and the Guyana Red Cross Society.

Haralsingh added, “… if you are a tour guide and you’re going out into remote parts of Guyana, this life saving skill is very, very important in the hinterland areas where there is hardly any communication, evacuation, (and) transportation to move someone, so being equipped with this life saving skills of First Aid, CPR is vitally essential and important.  Also, for our tour guides, it is important for our hotels and our places of accommodation because they can be of help to fellow employees, they can be of help to visitors and customers.”

The GTA director also hinted that media operatives could also benefit from this type of training in the future since these individuals would also be able to render assistance to persons needing CPR and first attendance.

Facilitator of the training exercise, Devaughn Lewis, in his introduction stated that the subsequent goal of this training is to have an Accident and Emergency (A&E) station at all public buildings in Guyana. This is one of the things that the Guyana Red Cross Society is advocating for consideration.

Haralsingh further mentioned, “Workplaces should ensure that they have someone who is trained in First Aid, CPR. It is good for schools. Sometimes you go to many events, whether it’s in regards to the (Rupununi) Rodeo whether it’s the Berbice Expo where ever you might be, and that’s why we want the tourism officers and those in the tourism industry equipped to render assistance wherever they are until professional help arrives.”

CPR is known as a lifesaving technique that is undertaken in the case of many emergencies, including heart attack or near drowning, in which someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped or their trachea or windpipe is blocked.

First Aid is the practice of assisting a person or persons suffering from a sudden accident, injury or illness.  First Aid also means the ‘first medical assistance’ that would prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery.

The first round of training is accommodating staff from GTA, Ministry of Business and Tourism as well employees from a number hotels, some tour guides and tour operators.

At the end of the training, the participants will be awarded with a certificate in First-Aid and CPR that will be valid for a period of three years.
