$300M set aside for major road upgrades

-East and West Bank Demerara, East Bank Essequibo areas to benefit

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Hon. Susan Rodrigues, says funds have been allotted for major upgrades to several roads along the East Bank Demerara (EBD) corridor, West Bank Demerara (WBD), and East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

Some $150Million has been allotted to upgrade four kilometres of access roads and bridges to industrial and commercial areas in the Prospect, Perseverance, Little and Great Diamond areas along the EBD.

This will give developers access to begin work on approximately 500 house lots at Prospect and Perseverance, and another 300 house lots in Little and Great Diamond, while creating jobs in the sector.

Another $150Million has been earmarked to upgrade three kilometres of roads to asphaltic concrete at Herstelling and Eccles, EBD; at Parfaite Harmonie, WBD and Zeelugt, EBE.

“This will bring great relief to more than 800 people or 200 existing house lot beneficiaries,” Minister Rodrigues said.

Both projects are expected to be implemented under the Ministry’s housing improvement programme for 2020.

Minister Rodrigues also recommitted to the delivery of 50,000 house lots under the PPP/C Administration within the next five years and gave the assurance that better housing solutions and a fair and transparent allocation process will be realised.
