36th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean starts

Guyana is participating at the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 36th Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean officially which opened today.

Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha led Guyana’s delegation along with Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Ms. Delma Nedd; Director General, Mr. Madanlall Ramraj; Monitoring and Evaluation Co-ordinator, Mrs. Natasha Beerjit-Deonarine and Chief Technical Officer, Mr. George Jervis.

Guyana will make its inputs on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Conference is being hosted virtually by Nicaragua. It is scheduled for October 19 to 21 and has received the full participation of 33 Member States in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Today, discussions were held on regional challenges in food and agriculture.

Until Wednesday, participants will benefit from discussions which include transforming food system for healthy diets; moving hand-in hand towards prosperous and inclusive societies; sustainable and climate resilient agriculture and driving innovation and digital agriculture.

It is hoped that this engagement will find joint solutions to the challenges of food security, rural development, innovation, climate change and sustainable agriculture, fisheries, livestock and forestry.
