– Guyana commended for leading the charge

DPI, Guyana, Friday, October 19, 2018

The third session of the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) High-level meeting of Caribbean Ministers from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) concluded on Friday afternoon at the Marriot Hotel Guyana.

The High-level forum was attended by CARICOM Ministers with responsibility for land management as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

The meeting was judged “fruitful” and “a true community meeting” as Guyana was commended for “leading the charge in this very important aspect of the region’s preservation.”

Saint Lucian Minister of Agriculture, Fishers, Planning and Natural Resources, Ezechiel Joseph stated that the outcome of the meeting was “very encouraging” as it provided a platform for members of Caribbean States to voice their opinions and find solutions to common problems. He underscored the importance for the Caribbean Community to “understand and appreciate” sustainable land management.

“Land is a major resource in the region and the proper management of this resource is important moving forward,” the Saint Lucian Minister said.

Minister of Agriculture and Land in Grenada, Yolande Bain Horsford observed that the meeting was “a great learning experience.”  “We intend as a Caribbean team to support PISLM,” she said.

The aim of the two-day session was to establish the agenda for the work of the PISLM for the next two to three years so as to position the Caribbean SIDS as global leaders in meeting its obligations in Sustainable Development Goal (SGD) fifteen. The meeting commenced on Thursday after the officials would have participated in technical workshops in the area of sustainable land management.
