4000 youths to participate in 1st Independence concert

As the tradition holds, the Government will host its Independence flag raising ceremony on Friday 25th at Durban Park.

This year’s ceremony will focus on the nations young people with emphasis on developing a strong sense of national pride, patriotism and appreciation for the strides Guyana has made, since gaining its independence in 1966.

Minister of Social Cohesion, George Norton, at a press conference today, said, “The ceremony will feature a grand display chronicling our development over the past 52 years while highlighting Guyana as an emerging green state.”

“In addition, there will be a parade consisting on members of the military and 1500 youths from various organisations inclusive of the schools’ cadet corps, scouts, pathfinders and secondary school students,” Norton said.

It was indicated by President Granger that every year, mostly adults participate in the Independence celebrations, therefore he suggested involving as many children as possible for this year’s observances.

Artistic Director of the Cultural Shows, Llyoda Garrett, said over two thousand children from all across Guyana will participate in the cultural celebration and many more in the parade itself.

“The children have been rehearsing for the four weeks and are anticipating putting on this display. I am so happy to hear the sponsors speak of continued partnership with us because we know that we can produce much more if we work hand in hand whether it is the private sector, government, entrepreneurs or artistes. Let’s show this Guyanese culture. We have a beautiful country”, Garrett added.

The flag raising ceremony will begin at 14:00hrs at the Durban Park on Friday, May 25. At 22:00hrs the Guyana Defense Force will put on a massive firework display at Stabroek Square to usher in Independence. This will be prefaced by a 2-hour ‘Independence Flag Concert’ featuring local performances.

The Government extends an invitation to all Guyanese to join in the observances.
