DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, December 11, 2018

Approximately $4Billion was this evening approved by the Committee of Supply as the 2019 budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Public Telecommunications.

Minister of Telecommunication, Catherine Hughes.

On day two of the consideration of estimates, Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes told the committee that the funds cater for several projects, some of which will be introduced in 2019.

Responding to a question posed by Opposition Member of Parliament, Gillian B. Persaud on the $14Million increase on the line item 6284, the Public Telecommunication Minister said that the allocation covers an array of expenditures.

One such expense provides for the rolling out of a data management project in 2019.

“The allocations will cater for a pilot project for our data management in the digitization of records, that’s approximately $3 million,” Minister Hughes explained

Other projects under this line item include the e-agriculture formulation project and the ICT for persons living with disabilities project. These, she noted, were also budgeted at $3 Million each.

The Public Telecommunications budget for 2019 also caters for the funding of continuous projects such as Girls in ICT, Robotics and Caribbean Telecommunications Union awareness program. The Ministry will continue to support STEM Guyana as well.

The budgetary allocations will also see the construction and renovation of several buildings and office under the responsibility of the Telecommunication Ministry.
