Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall SC, has said 53 Enterprise, East Coast Demerara families will soon receive their land titles, after waiting for over 30 years.

The Minister made this announcement during a community outreach in the area, led by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, on Saturday.

Minister Nandlall explained that an intervention was sought after the families complained about the matter.

“What I found is that the land is owned by GuySuCo and was passed to the Sugar Welfare Fund to pass the title to the occupants. Unfortunately, GuySuCo cannot pass the transport to the Sugar Welfare Fund because they cannot get a compliance from the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) or a certificate of compliance from the NDC because they owe taxes,” Minister Nandlall said.

Minister Nandlall therefore, engaged the Registrar of the Deeds and Commercial Registries Authority, to waive the requirement for the transaction. He also sought the intervention of the Commissioner General of GRA to grant a limited certificate of compliance to GuySuCo in order to pass the transport.

He anticipates that the process to grant the concession would be completed within the next week, after which the process of handing over the certificates will commence.
