76 more youths complete leadership training

The Office of the Presidential Advisor on Youth Empowerment in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport of the Ministry of Education, held its Sixth Youth Leadership Training Programme over two weekends, September 16th-18th and September 23rd-25th at the Madewini Training Center.

Seventy Six (76) youth participants from all the Administrative Regions, excepting 8 and 9 were part of this programme.

In the National Youth Policy, the Government of Guyana gave its commitment to develop youth leaders and expose them to systems of leadership. The latest leadership training programme is another in a series of which is in keeping with the fourth strategic area of the National Youth Policy of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.

During the two weekends, participants were taught concepts such as the Qualities of a leader, Management and the Management Process, Communication and the Communication Process, Effective Public Speaking, Problem Solving and Decision Making, among other topics.

Additionally, the participants were challenged to practice good time management skills and were engaged in practical work to develop their leadership skills.

Among the tasks given to the youth participants were Dorm Leadership, Committee Leadership and a demonstration of leadership executed through the closing ceremony.

This Sixth Leadership Training Programme also featured a ‘Mock Youth Parliament’ where young participants engaged in a practical session through which they learned about Parliamentary Language and Parliamentary Procedures.

Among the motions debated during the Mock Parliament included Teenage Pregnancy, School Dropouts, Dance Hall Music and its connection to crime and the issue of abortion.

The featured address was delivered by Minister of Citizenship, Winston Felix who encouraged the participants to cherish the knowledge they received.

Further, the Minister of Citizenship urged the participants to return to their communities and utilise the knowledge gained, for the growth and development of their youth organisations and communities. Minister Felix also reminded the participants that since its ascension to office, the APNU-AFC government has placed youth development high on its agenda.
