Full support will be given to fast track Public Procurement Commission – Harmon

GINA, GUYANA, Thursday, October 06, 2016

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon said the government remains committed to establishing the Public Procurement Commission.

At today’s post Cabinet media conference, Minister Harmon said, “It is an issue which has to do with the Public Accounts Committee setting out terms and conditions for the Commission itself.”

According to the minister, President David Granger has indicated that, “he is ready to sign the document appointing the Commissioners.”

The Minister noted that recent media reports quoted the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, former Minister Irfaan Ally as saying that it (the Commission) will be among the first business of the National Assembly when it resumes Parliamentary sittings later this month.

“We would like that to be a top priority as well, and we will give that our full support to ensure that it is fast tracked,” Harmon said.

Meanwhile, addressing recent revelations on procurement processes at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Harmon said it could be “a possible breakdown in its (GECOM’s) procurement system.

He noted that since GECOM is an independent Constitutionally mandated body, the government cannot “go to them and say do this and do that.”

Harmon said GECOM was being run by Commissioners and as such they have a structure and “the government and the people of Guyana must put pressure on that structure to function.”
