The Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton today announced that the government’s hope is to have trained musicians attached to each region of Guyana in the coming years and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment “to nurturing the creativity of our young people.”
Minister Norton was at the time delivering the feature address at the closing ceremony of the Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited Pan Minors Music Literacy Programme for 2018.
He lauded RBL for their continued support in the development of the country’s youth adding “anything we can do for our young boys and girls to mould their ideas and guide them to a positive future impresses me.”
RBL Managing Director, Richard Sammy, stated that the bank firmly believes that they “have a meaningful role in positively shaping the minds of our youths,” noting that through the Pan Minors workshop, the bank hopes “to awaken in Guyana’s youth, the power to learn and succeed in the steel pan art form.”
“We take pride in our involvement in enabling opportunities that positively impact the lives of our youth and this program promotes an appreciation for arts while helping participants to realise their full potential.”
Sammy noted that the program helps build self-esteem and life skills in youths such as “discipline, focus, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment that comes with success.”
Eighty-six youths from across Region Four benefited from the Music Literacy Program. They were awarded certificates for the completion of the course and were encouraged to use the skills gained over the last three weeks in other aspects of their lives, especially academically.
