Take every precaution against COVID-19 – GGDMA President reminds miners.

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Members of the local mining industry are being reminded to take every precaution necessary against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Andron Alphonso, President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), in a pre-recorded video message noted that COVID-19 has already impacted some mining areas, therefore persons in the sector needed to be extra careful.

“As some of you are aware, COVID-19 has made its way into our mining areas. In this reality, we need to take every precaution to protect ourselves from this disease.” Alphonso urged.

The GGDMA President said getting infected equals no work for miners, and as such, they needed to practice the COVID-19 safety measures.

He also reminded miners that though they were away from the local population, their chances of contracting the virus was still very high, and reiterated the need to follow safety guidelines.

“The first step is to practice good hygiene, wash your hands as many times as possible for at least 20 seconds, ensure to keep your distance from others at least six feet away and wear a mask when you are out at work and conducting business.”

Alphonso also urged miners to not be hesitant and to report to a health institution if they felt unwell at any given time.

A particular concern about COVID-19 cases in some mining areas is that neighbouring Indigenous communities can be impacted.

The Ministry of Public Health has also appealed to persons in the mining sector who work in interior locations to learn their COVID-19 status, especially since some COVID-19 positive cases are asymptomatic; which means that a person can carry the virus without manifesting any early signs or symptoms.

In the meantime, health institutions in all regions have trained personnel to conduct screening and testing, as well as have been outfitted with the necessary equipment to do the same.

Mining activities have continued per normal in many areas as the sector has been declared an essential service.
