A coroner’s inquest will clear the uncertainty – Min. Ramjattan on seawall shooting case

Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan said he will support the police’s version of the seawall shooting incident until the findings of a coroner’s inquest are revealed.
Pressed by local media to justify his support of the police in the incident on Tuesday, the minister said, “simply because that’s what you normally do. When there is an investigation into a murder what do you expect me to do? Do you question the police investigation? You do not.”

Minister Ramjattan noted that a responsible government will attach credibility and reliability to its police investigators. “Unless there is something so badly done or so egregious that you are going to question the police immediately,” he said.
On March 15, Dextroy Cordis, Kwame Assanah, and Errol Adams were shot and killed by police after a shootout on the seawall road in Georgetown. Police said the exchange occurred following intelligence-led operations. The men were trailed from a city bank. An eyewitness has since come forward but doubt has been cast on his credibility.
Minister Ramjattan said his support is behind the police given their credibility and reliability. He added that a coroner’s inquest will properly clear the uncertainty surrounding the case.
“There can be the witness being called there and I hope that the coroner being the kind of investigator they are not going to be afraid to come forward all those witnesses who are allegedly eyewitnesses to the actual incident,” Minister Ramjattan said.
Following a meeting of the National Security Committee, President David Granger ordered that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) launch an investigation to determine the circumstances under which the alleged suspects were shot and killed.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will launch the inquest in accordance with the Coroners Act Chapter 4:03.
