“A Guyana Still Life”

Deaf Association hosts 3rd annual art competition

DPI, Guyana, Monday, December 10, 2018

A display of Deaf art was unveiled at the National Library’s Conference Hall this morning.  The artwork comprised pieces that were submitted to the Deaf Art Competition facilitated by the Deaf Association of Guyana Incorporated and the Minister of Education.

This is the third year the Association has hosted the art competition.

Sabine McIntosh, President of the Deaf Association told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that the theme “A Guyana Still Life,” introduced a genre of art that was new to almost all of the students, however, they rose to the challenge.

“This year’s theme was a bit of a test because many students were unfamiliar with the genre of still life from an artistic point of view but it was great to see them living up to the challenge…they have produced some great artwork and even in some cases you can see others improve artistically which is great,” she explained.

Participants were drawn from the David Rose School for the Handicapped, as well as schools in Orealla, Linden, Falmouth, Tuschen, Corriverton, Bartica and Sand Creek.

McIntosh noted the association is heartened with the fair amount of attention the competition garnered however she is hopeful that next year will see more participation from students in special needs schools.

The art competition catered for the participation of deaf students and out-of-school youths between the ages of 5 and 25. Categories ranged from black and white and colour drawings to oil pastels.

It was highlighted that this year first place prizes were donated by Rainforest Tours, Native Americans Tour among others.
