Hon. Minister of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. George Norton.

Today, Guyanese from all walks of life will join our Hindu brothers and sisters at home and in various other parts of the world, in celebration of Holi – the festival of colours.

On this day, more than ever before, I call on every Guyanese to put aside their differences and unite in celebration of this beautiful and auspicious occasion, commonly known as Phagwah.

Although a Hindu festival, Phagwah is a joyful national holiday celebrated by all Guyanese, regardless, of race, religion, political affiliation or social status.

This spectacularly colourful festival is an undeniable demonstration of the beauty that is our diversity. Consequently, the observance of Phagwah is not limited to playing with just one colour. Rather, it is a celebration of the unification of all shades of all colours.

I believe that Holi this year has come at a most convenient time, and I am confident that today’s celebrations will help to shatter the barriers that divide us, and mend every strained relation.

It is my most genuine hope that today’s celebration will inspire each of us to work even harder in pursuit of a Guyana where all are loved, respected and celebrated, equally.

Shubh Holi to every Guyanese, particularly our Hindu brothers and sisters; may these celebrations be most rewarding to each of you and all of Guyana.
