AmCham Guyana inks MOU with ACCA to build capacity of finical professionals

The American Chamber of Commerce in Guyana (AmCham Guyana) signed a two-year Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the Association for Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Caribbean to develop the capacity of local financial professionals.

At a breakfast meeting at the Marriott Hotel this morning to mark the agreement, President of AmCham Guyana, Zulfikar Ally noted the agreement is part of AmCham’s aim to strengthen the private sector.

Ally said the partnership with ACCA will build the audit and accounting department of AmCham Guyana members and other businesses. The MOU covers training in leadership, ethics, governance and anti-money laundering among other areas.

“AmCham Guyana will ensure that the strategic objective we have set ourselves in this MOU will be carried out and that our members will start to see the benefits of this collaboration immediately,” Ally said.

Head of the ACCA Caribbean, Shelly Ann Mohammed, noted the partnership is especially important in building Guyana’s local content capacity for the oil and gas sector.

“[Companies] are going to need strong auditing, strong accounting background … they’re standards are going to need to be in alignment with global regulations so they will need to be aware of these global regulations and what it means for them locally here,” Mohammed said.
