Amended Nurses and Midwives’ Bill to be presented to National Assembly
─ Bill will allow nurses to further studies and specialise

In the near future, nurses will have the opportunity to study and specialise in desired fields of nursing. This will be made possible after Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence presents an amended Nurses’ and Midwives Bill to the National Assembly
“It [the bill] is now completed and I am about to take it to Cabinet for Cabinet’s consent so that I can take it to the National Assembly.”
The existing nurses’ bill which governs the training and employment of nurses and midwives, has been made law since 1942.
“I looked at that and it is out of sync… it did not allow our nurses to be able to operate at a specialised level so we have been working on that bill,” Minster Lawrence told Region Ten nurses during a recent visit.
According to the minister, she has worked tirelessly with the relevant stakeholders including the nurses’ association to compile this necessary document. The Health Minister explained that with the bill successfully passing through the National Assembly, nurses would have the opportunity to study and upgrade their careers through tertiary education and other studies.
“That is going to give you the authority to decide what you really want, what you are comfortable with, what is your ambition… you can now decide where you want to go.”
This development coming out of the Public Health Ministry ties into an ongoing campaign with special attention given to training and academic elevation of all staff.
