DPI, Guyana, Sunday, October 6, 2019

Twenty-two pupils who have performed well at the 2019 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) were, on Sunday, awarded by the Burnham Foundation. The students were also inducted into the Forbes Burnham Mentorship Scheme (FBAMS).

The FBAMS is the 2013 successor scheme to the Georgetown District Awards and Mentorship Scheme of 2001. It maintains the original spirit and intent, thus its motto states: “Promoting, Nurturing and Caring for our Youth.”

The scheme provides the youths and their parents with exposure to various indoor activities that positively impact the development of the children, and the parenting skills of their guardians.  Additionally, it provides an opportunity for mentees to give back to society through volunteerism.

Chairman of the Mentorship Scheme, Vincent Alexander said the foundation sees the initiative as “complementing the school system.” At least once a month, the members of the FBAMS are engaged in various lectures, covering socio-psychological topics, among others. The sessions are facilitated by qualified mentors.

“We hope that this scheme helps young people to be ideal citizens… for them to appreciate the importance of school and learning and also for them to appreciate the importance of values and morals,” added Chairman Alexander.

Minister of Public Telecommunications, Hon. Catherine Hughes, in her remarks, congratulated the young mentees while explaining that the step they have taken is only the beginning of many achievements ahead.

“I want you to know as young citizens of Guyana, you have the power to choose and to shape your own destiny… never doubt your ability as a young individual to start to change yourself, to start to dream about what you want to be and the contributions you want to make to this beautiful land of Guyana,” Minister Hughes said.

An enthusiastic mentor at the Forbes Burnham Mentorship scheme herself, Minister Hughes, while speaking specifically to the parents and guardians, underscored that it is important for them to spend sufficient time with their children, noting that the children will achieve whatever they were mentored to accomplish.

In her continued effort to promote the use of technology in Guyana, the Public Telecommunications Minister presented a digital tablet to each awardee. The first exercise for the mentees will be the medical session, scheduled for next Saturday.
