DPI, Guyana, Monday, July 30, 2018

On Sunday, July 29, 2018, the Coalition Government and the citizens of Essequibo, especially the village of Dartmouth, laid to rest Winifred Diana Hopkinson. Born on July 29, 1932, Hopkinson passed away on July 17, 2018. She is the mother of the Regional Executive Officer of Region Two, Rupert Hopkinson.

Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General Basil Williams, SC., addressed the mourners gathered to pay their respects.  Minister Williams noted that “even though Winifred Diana Hopkinson was not awarded a Medal of Service, like her husband the late former Chairman of Region Two, Mr. Kenneth Hopkinson MS (aka Bagie), she was right by his side supporting her husband.”

REO Hopkinson, who performed the eulogy for his late mother, pointed out that Winifred Hopkinson lived her life by giving to the poor and needy. “That was her joy,” he told the mourners.” He continued, “Mom loved to cook and she also had a great sense of humour.”

Also extending condolences to the family and friends of the late Winifred Hopkinson was Eugene Gilbert, Head of the Community Development Center (CDC) which falls under the purview of the Ministry of Communities.

Tributes came from a wide cross-section of persons within the community. Some in the form of music recitals performed by her daughters, grandchildren and from those who knew her well.

“Winnie”, as she was fondly called, left an indelible mark on the lives of many who crossed her path. Sunday would have been her 88th birthday.

Winifred Diana Hopkinson leaves to mourn, 10 children; four boys and six girls; 27 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
