DPI, Guyana, Thursday, November 1, 2018

The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) today opened applications for its Core Homes Support and Home Improvement Subsidy, under the Adequate Housing Urban Accessibility Programme.

The government-subsidised programmes will target families with low affordability that have housing needs. The Core Home Support targets households living on lots valued $92,000 or less that were regularised or developed by the CH&PA.

CH&PA’s Deputy Director of Community Development, Donell Bess-Bascom said the programme satisfies areas as far as Grove/Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Parfaite Harmonie on the West Bank of Demerara and La Bonne Intention on the East Coast of Demerara.

“For the core home support programme, we will be constructing a complete concrete building that will not be more than 400 square feet. They will be equipped with a sanitary block and will have the necessary electrical and plumbing fitting.”

Once successful, the beneficiaries will pay a total of $100,000 for the homes, which will see further funding from the government. Bess-Bascom said there is a wider reach for the Home Improvement Subsidy programme. According to her, applicants who are within the project boundary and are the owners of house lots valued $92,000 and have a monthly income of $75,000 or less can be beneficiaries of the programme.

She emphasised that the CH&PA, will at all times, have a high level of scrutiny during application process.

“We will have to do a very thorough prioritisation process to ensure that the most critical cases are the ones that benefit. Special consideration will have interventions for persons with disabilities.”

The application process will come to an end on February 1, 2019. Following this, there will be a period for scrutiny, which is expected to last for at least eight months. CH&PA will commence construction, immediately after the verification process.

Bess-Bascom said while applications can be uplifted at the various offices across regions, they must be returned to the Brickdam office of the CH&PA. Applications are being issued at the Mayor and City Council, NDC’s on the East Bank of Demerara, the Region Four RDC and NDC’s within that locale. The same process is available in Region Three (Essequibo Island/ West Demerara).
