Bar Association President praises administration on judicial transformation

The President of the Guyana Bar Association Kamal Ramkarran recently lauded the administration for transformative works in the judicial system.

“These developments show clear commitment by the government and judiciary to a significant improvement in access to and delivery of justice,” Ramkarran stated at the launch of a new wing at the High Court, which houses the land court.

He pointed out that the opening of this new wing is, “only the latest in the series of developments which transformed the face of legal practice in Guyana,” and looks forward to a stronger and more effective legal system.

In highlighting, some of the tangible ways in which the judicial system has been revamped Ramkarram mentioned the construction of two buildings to house new courts; a new Family Court division, dedicated only to family matters with special rules, knowledgeable and experienced judges to function in the new Family Court and in the land court.

The Bar Association President also noted that a transcription system has been partially implemented in some courts.

Additionally, at least ten young and energetic judges including two at the Land Court have been appointed to the High Court, two vibrant capable and experienced judges have been appointed to act as Chancellor and Chief Justice. He also highlighted another initiative, the creation of a special constitutional and administrative law division headed by the Chief Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire.

“The entire system of Civil Justice has been completely revamped,” Ramkarran said, the implementation of the civil procedure rules in February 2017 replaced rules that were in place for almost 62 years.
