Residents of the township of Bartica in Region Seven are anticipating continued development following a landslide win by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) at the recently held Local Government Elections.

Of the nine constituencies, the APNU won seven while the Peoples’ Progressive Party (PPP) won two in the Proportional Representation System. In the First Past the Post system, seven of the APNU candidates were elected while the two PPP candidates were elected. In total, of the three parties that contested, APNU secured 12 seats, PPP five seats and the Alliance For Change (AFC) received one seat.

The APNU secured a total of 1,521 votes, PPP 1,145 votes and the AFC 346 votes. The residents of Bartica expressed their satisfaction with the results and anticipate sustained development.

Sheldon Callendar told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that he was very pleased with the results of the elections since he had expected such an outcome. Callender said, “I am looking forward to more improvements in Bartica, the continued progress in Bartica with the roads and so on”.

Fellow Bartician, Patrick Johnson shared that he too was satisfied with the LGE results because “… the people that are in [office] right now, are going to work together because we are Barticians and we believe working together in harmony; and I know that whoever wins is going to continue the progress that is happening in Bartica.”

According to another resident, Carl Abrams, “everything happens for the best. So, let us continue striving as we are right now”.

Yesterday marked the first time in the post-independence history of Guyana, that successive Local Government Elections (LGE) was held when legally and constitutionally due. It was also the second LGE that Bartica participated in since officially being declared a Town in 2016 by President David Granger.
