Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally has assured members of the Belle Vue Cane Farmers Marketing Co-operative Society of a final settlement of the decades-old land dispute affecting them.

This assurance was given after several persons took the issue to the Region 3 leg of the go

The issue began in October 2009, when the Co-op took farmers to arbitration over land and the award granted in favour of the Belle Vue Co-op Society. Since then, several persons have been claiming ownership of the lands awarded to the society and have been occupying and cultivating the lands illegally.

“I intend to follow up this issue to the end,” Minister Ally emphasised, noting that “it has been on the front burner for a while, Minister within the Ministry, with responsibility for Labour, Keith Scott has been looking into it… It is a complicated matter because we have different people claiming the society and so on.”

The minister added that the matter needs to be resolved promptly; therefore, it is necessary to have both sides meet to discuss the way forward.

“The bottom line is that we need to bring the issue to an end, some may be happy with the solution, some may not be happy,” Minister Ally noted.

She also dealt with matters concerning land titles under the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund Committee (SILWFC). There were two cases where persons paid for their lands years ago and have not received their titles.

The minister promised to personally follow up with the matter to ensure that the persons receive their titles for the lands which payment have already been made.
