Berbice Educational Institute honours 78 graduates

– significant improvements at 2018 CSEC

The Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), on Thursday, held its 2018 graduation ceremony with a total of 78 graduates honoured for outstanding performances.

Senior Home Economics teacher, Vanessa Barron-Benjamin, who spoke on behalf of the principal, remarked that the graduating class of 2018 has made this year memorable, as the school saw a significant increase of 34 per cent in grades this year. In 2017, the secondary school obtained 61.36 per cent and this went up to 73.39 per cent after the May-June 2018 CSEC Examinations.

Barron-Benjamin said that the school received a total of 63 Grade Ones, 245 Grade Twos, 390 Grade Threes, 207 Grade Fours and 46 Grade Fives. She said although there was a drastic improvement, much is still needed to be done in different subject areas especially mathematics.

In moving forward, Barron-Benjamin encouraged parents to be more involved in their children’s academic affairs and guaranteed that the teachers of BEI would work assiduously to improve the grades come 2019.

The feature address was presented by Deputy Commander of B Division Senior Superintendent, Wayne DeHearte. He encouraged the graduates to be disciplined, continue to progress and adopt positive values: “Do not let no one keep you back, continue to bask in the glory of transformation.”

During the charge by Councillor of the town’s municipality, Patricia Lynch, the 78 graduates, were instructed to never allow anyone to undermine their confidence. She also called on the parents present to contribute wholeheartedly towards the schooling of their children and guide them along the journey to the profession they wish to achieve.

Christina Albert was this year’s valedictorian and said she was elated to finally complete her secondary education with meaningful achievements. The optimistic teenager, who said she wants to acquire a doctorate degree, also encouraged her colleagues to have a productive life and to leave a legacy to pass on.
