After thirteen years of businesses showcasing their products in the East Berbice-Corentyne Region, the Corentyne Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday officially launched its 14th annual Berbice Exposition and Trade Fair.

The event is a collaborative effort of the Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, the Government and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of the Region Six.

Addressing those gathered, Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin explained the critical role expositions play in promoting businesses. He said with the rise of the oil and gas sector, entrepreneurs must understand the importance of certification and standards.

“I was happy to see that in the theme of this year’s event there is a reference to professional standards and entrepreneurship. Standards have become so important in doing business internationally that we can no longer afford to ignore standards. Professional and other standards must go hand in hand with entrepreneurship if we want to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead,” the Business Minister remarked.

Chairman of Region Six, David Armogan highlighted that revolutionary thinking is a necessary factor to the continued success of businesses in the region. “I think for too long we have been fixated on traditional things and our business people need to think outside of the traditional areas and look at other areas in which we will be able to add value to our products.”

President of the Corentyne Chambers of Commerce, Poonai Bhigroog said while not forgetting agriculture, this year’s theme was created with the potential oil industry in mind. He boasted of the success of the 2017 expo noted that numerous vendors have indicated an interest in participating in this year’s trade show.

Bhigroog said he looks forward to continued support from patrons in Region Six and those overseas.

The expo will be held under the theme: “Advancing Economic Progress through professional standards and entrepreneurship” and will run from October 5-8 at the Albion Sports Complex.
