A group of Black Bush Polder youths has started a sanitation drive within their area amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exercise began on Sunday at Lesbeholden Polder following the donation of cleaning supplies by residents and businesses who had pooled their resources. Administrator at the Mibicuri Hospital Dr. Sadhna Samtani is overseeing the sanitation exercise.

Armed with disinfectant, spray cans and bottles and motor blowers, some 15 youths took to the streets sanitising public spaces including bus sheds, bridges, gas stations, streets, business places, and even residents’ homes.

They are also using the opportunity to share information on social distancing and other measures to help prevent the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19 virus.

They also plan to distribute masks.

Speaking with the media, one of the coordinators of the venture, Kristina Muthusami said more residents were paying attention to the guidelines and taking the necessary precautions since the sanitation exercise began. Many have also come forward and pledged their support to the cause.

“I do hope the youths in the other communities can start a similar campaign. We have to protect ourselves, and because we are on social media and other platforms, we have access to more information faster and should use it positively to help educate and safeguard our communities,” she said.

Other Black Bush communities such as Mibicuri, Johanna, and Yakasuri will also benefit from the exercise.

“If we as youths take the leadership role many others will follow, and together we can beat this virus,” Muthusami stated.
