Cabinet approves participation  for state employees’ to attend  international workshops

Minister of State Joseph Harmon today, announced that Cabinet has approved for Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine and Superintendent Brian Eastman’s attendance to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) counter-terrorism strategy conference. The conference will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from June 12-13.This was disclosed during the post cabinet briefing at the Ministry of Presidency.

The Minister explained that the conference will be convened by CARICOM Implementing Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) in collaboration with the European Union will finalise the counter -terrorism strategy. This will help guide the CARICOM member states in their efforts to address terrorism and violent extremism.

Minister Harmon said that Cabinet has also approved the attendance of a member from the Ministry of Public Health to the National Drug Observatories (NDO) meeting for member countries of the Community of Latin America and Caribbean states (CELAC). This meeting will be held in San Jose, Costa Rica from July 4 to 5.

The Minister of State explained that the NDO’s were created in CELAC member states through cooperation in drug policies from a partnership mechanism between the European Union and CELAC. He noted that the programme “provides an integrated system about collecting drug indicators on production, consumption, trafficking and associated crime to effect policy to reduce supply and demand”.

Cabinet also approved for Land Information and Mapping Manager Naseem Nasir, Information Systems Manager David Cole, both from the Lands and Surveys Commission and Donnette Streete from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be attending the second workshop of the Integrated Map of South America project which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from June 4 to 9. Minister Harmon said that the workshop will be a part of the on-going works to develop a digital integrated map of countries of South America.

The Minister of State said that Cabinet has also approved Senior Manager of the Communication and Tax Advisory Services, division of the Guyana Revenues Authority (GRA) Gavin Lowe and Christina Singh attached to the National Procurement and Tender Board Administration Association attendance to the European Union and Caribbean African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) CARIFORUM.

This capacity building project will be held in in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from June 5 to 6. Minister Harmon said that the project is aimed at capacity building in areas of public procurement and custom and trade facilitations.

Additionally, Cabinet has approved for a member from the Ministry of Finance to attend the regional seminar on measurement of social expenditure. This seminar will be held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from June 7 to 8.

The Minister of State said that the seminar is convened by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ELAC) in collaboration with the Germany Development agency. He noted that the seminar aims for international cooperation to raise awareness regarding the concepts, methods and classifications which are used to produce logistics on social expenditure.

The attendance to the various workshops is in keeping with the government’s commitment to improve efficiency in developing and strengthening the state employees’ skills and to establish a stronger  career public service corps.
