Carnegie students benefit from donation

DPI, Guyana, Monday, October 8, 2018

Steps to Empowerment Inc. (STE), on Monday, donated several learning materials and equipment to the Carnegie School of Home Economics in an effort to improve the quality of teaching.

Co-founder of STE, Allyson McDowell told the students that the purpose of the donation is simply to give back to the institution, as a past student, for the benefit of current and future students.

“It (Steps to Empowerment) is a small charity I started after I had to retire when I was diagnosed with lung cancer 4 years ago. I always wanted to give back and help others and I first started sending materials and supplies to the school in 2017. When I came back this year I wanted to physically come and donate,” McDowell explained while noting that she will continue to support the organization in any way possible.

Penelope Harris, the Principal of the Carnegie School of Home Economics, expressed appreciation to McDowell and her team for their continued support as it puts the students at an advantageous position to be better equipped within their respective fields.

She highlighted that more than 250 students benefitted from a similar donation last year.

According to the principal, STE’s donation has prompted Carnegie to establish a donation register and donor encouragement programme.

“The aim of the programme is to engage donors fully and utilize more personalized efforts in keeping with our (Carnegie) mandate. We would like to secure our relationship with STE by inviting them to coordinate their interests and continue their involvement,” Harris noted.

She also urged the students to care for and appreciate the donation, as it would not only be beneficial to them, but also to those to come who come after.
