CCAC developing Homebuilders Roadmap

Homebuilding can be stressful but the Competition and Consumers Affairs Commission (CCAC) is helping owners by shaping a homebuilder’s roadmap.

Today, governmental and non-governmental agencies in the construction sector were consulted for their input into the document.

Consumer Affairs Officer of CCAC, Feyona Austin-Paul noted the objective is to have relevant authorities in the construction industry highlight their processes, legal framework and consumer requirements to aid in the development of the homebuilder’s roadmap.

Austin-Paul noted the aim is also to create a database of certified businesses and individuals for consumers. The information will be provided in the roadmap.

“The commission has recognised that a lot of shoddy work is being done in the construction industry which threatens the safety and the life of consumers. We are meeting with all the stakeholders … to develop the steps and procedures which will aid consumers … in the entire construction process,” Austin-Paul said.

The CCAC will be working closely with the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) and other relevant authorities as it drafts the roadmap.

Austin-Paul said the homebuilder’s roadmap is expected to be finalised within six months’ time. Statistics show that the construction industry has been contributing some nine per cent to Guyana’s GDP since 2008.

The CCAC is mandated by the Consumers Affairs Act of 2011 to ensure that consumer affairs and free and fair competition are evident in production, trade and commerce in Guyana.
