Children in hinterland communities to benefit from footwear

(Ministry of Education, July 15, 2016) In keeping with its overall mandate to ensure that, all citizens of Guyana are given the best possible opportunity to achieve their full potential, the Ministry of Education has embarked on an initiative to provide shoes to children in Hinterland and riverine communities in the Administrative Regions.

In June, the Ministry commenced distribution of 26,086 pairs of footwear to children living in 231 hinterland communities across Guyana.  Among the 231 communities are: Canal Bank, Matthews Ridge, Chinese Landing, and Wallaba in Region 1;  Kabakaburi, Hackney, Ulele and, Jacklow in Region 2; Caria Caria, Fort Island, Lower Bonaskia in Region 3; St. Cuthbert’s, Long Creek, and Laluni in Region 4; Biaboo, Augsburg, and  De Hoop in Region 5; Orealla, Bara Bara, and Leeds in Region 6; Wineperu, Philipai, and Kaikan in Region 7; Chenapau, Mahdia, and Micobie in Region 8; Katoka, Nappi, and Baitoon in Region 9; and Kwakwani, Mabura, and Bamia in Region 10.

The Ministry is pleased to announce that shoes have been delivered to those and all of the other communities.

The Ministry of Education received approximately 3000 shoes from the United States Embassy – Georgetown through its Humanitarian Assistance programme.  The Government of Guyana expended $29M to acquire the 26,086 shoes for the children in the aforementioned hinterland communities.
